Winnie Sidharta Ambron

Winnie Sidharta Ambron is a recent Masters of Fine Art graduate from the Ohio State University where she currently serves as an adjunct professor.  A native of Indonesia, Sidharta received her undergraduate education both at Petra Christian University in Surbaya, Indonesia and the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China.  Sidharta’s current body of work reflects her classical training while demonstrating a contemporary approach. Pushing the boundaries of traditional watercolor and portraiture, Sidharta layers saturated, textured pigment with transparent washes to develop collage-like paintings that merge a figure with abstract patterning. Sidharta often begins with an idealized representation, similar to a model from fashion photography, and fragments or dissolves their image with a dense camouflage of decorative motifs.  In her words, “Through experimentation with representation and abstraction, my work aims to… engage both traditional and contemporary modes of painting… and cultivate new ways of thinking about the body.”
